Tragedy erupted on Sunday night in Las Vegas, Nevada, as the largest mass shooting in modern American history unfolded, leaving over 50 dead and over 500 wounded. Now, those who witnessed the horrific events are coming forward to share their stories, such as that of a 19-year-old Marine who met a pretty girl just a few hours before it started raining bullets. What he did as soon as the massacre began left the young woman shocked.
While thousands are turning this tragedy into a political platform before the bodies are even cold, survivors of the massacre are starting to speak out and share their stories, such as one young girl who recalled the chilling moment that chaos unfolded. She posted her first-hand experience on the Love What Matters Facebook page to share her story, and it is quickly going viral.
Renee Cesario had met 19-year-old Marine Brendan Kelly only two hours before Jason Aldean took the stage. In the Facebook post detailing what happened, the survivor wrote, “Brendan and I met only 2 hours before the Jason Aldean show. I left my friends so we could go up super close to the front for the end of the night. We were just dancing and having fun and then all of the sudden there were loud noises that sounded like fireworks, but no lights were going off.”
She continued, “It stopped, and Jason Aldean kept playing but then the shots fired again, and he ran off the stage. Before I knew what was going on, Brendan tackled me down to the ground and covered me from the fire. It stopped again, and he looked around to see what was happening and then it just kept going. He looked at me and said ‘We have to get out of here. We can’t stay here. It’s not safe.’” Luckily, this was one Marine who wasn’t going to leave his fellow man or woman behind.
“Then he pulled my arm up to get me out of the piles of people. We had no idea who was dead or who was alive. We just started to run,” Renee recalled. “He kept telling me it was going to be okay and to keep running until we were safe. He even let me use his phone to stay in touch with my sister so she knew I was safe.” She concluded, “The whole night he didn’t leave my side.”
The now viral post about the young hero, Brendan Kelly, who saved Renee’s life, is what we needed to see during this time of tragedy. Thousands of comments thanked Kelly for his selfless act and are grateful for a happy ending out of all the madness. One Facebook user commented, “Your life has been changed first by evil, second by the hero sent to you by an angel. Treasure life’s gifts, they are so rare.”
We need more people like Kelly in this world to protect the innocent from the evil. While unimaginable tragedy has marked this horrifying ordeal, it has also demonstrated the overwhelming goodness in the majority of Americans, many of whom stepped up to assist their fellow man, just like Marine Brendan Kelly heroically did.
